Drowned Forest
Schalkwijk
Circular walk along inundations at Schalkwijk
Schalkwijk - The Drowned Forest. That sounds mysterious! In the water of the 'Verdronken Bos' are lonely trees that have died. Only the stumps of decayed trees still protrude above the water.
Wet feet?
The last stumps of the trees that still protrude above the water will also disappear at some point. Until then, the Verdronken Bos is a special place. A boardwalk runs through the water. So you can discover the Verdronken Bos near Schalkwijk without getting your feet wet!
History
More than 10 years ago there was a real forest here on the Schalkwijksewetering. Now it is a place to house excess water. The trees do not survive all that water and so the forest at Schalwijk became a Drowned Forest.
Circular walk
A visit to the Verdronken Bos can easily be combined with the slightly more inconvenient inundation field. That is a circular walk of less than 3 kilometers. You can also walk further to the waterline fortifications at Tull and 't Waal. Take binoculars because you can spot birds here.
