Welcome: Utrecht underground DOMunder
Utrecht
An underground discovery
Utrecht - Dom Square (Cathedral Square) is the oldest part of the city of Utrecht. Situated near the Rhine, the Romans built at the beginning of our era Castellum Trajectum to guard the Northern border of the Roman Empire. In later centuries several churches were resurrected on this spot until the present cathedral was built in 1254. During the centuries history left its traces layer by layer. In DOMunder you can discover all these traces from the past.
What is DOMunder?
DOMunder is a cross-section of 20 centuries of history 5 meters underground. You make a special journey through time from throwing bullets and remains of a Roman wall from 45 AD, via a medieval skeleton and the foundations of the collapsed central nave of the Dom to the lead water pipe that was installed at the end of the 19th century after a major cholera epidemic in Utrecht.
Treasure under the Dom Square
During the construction of DOMunder, a treasure with 44 precious ancient coins was also found. The gold and silver coins date from the early Middle Ages.
