Hidden castle in the city center of Leiden
Leiden - Ten centuries ago, there was an important river crossing in the heart of Leiden, where the Old and New Rhine meet in the Stille Rijn. A lot of trade was conducted in this place. To secure their income, the people of Leiden built a 12-metre-high mound (motte) with a round castle on top.
Motte-and-bailey castle
The motte-and-bailey castle stands on Leiden's only hill and has survived many centuries. Of course, the castle no longer has a strategic function today. Due to economic prosperity and population growth, the castle has been completely surrounded by the city over time. The castle hill and the castle are now a pleasant city park.
From the high walls you have a beautiful view of Leiden.
