The lowest point in the Netherlands. The base of the monument corresponds exactly to the level of the lowest point.
Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel
Traveling below sea level
Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel - The Netherlands literally means 'low lands'. And we all know that large parts of the Netherlands needs dykes and delta works to stay dry - approximately 40% of the nation's land lies below sea level. Some parkings at the highways do have a sign indicating whether you are above or below sea level. But how many meters are we talking about? What's the lowest point in the Netherlands?
Zuiderplaspolder
The lowest point in the Netherlands is the Zuiderplaspolder at Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel. This point is 6,74 meters below N.A.P. (= the average waterlevel in the Netherlands). In addition to the lowest point there is also the deepest point. Unfortunately you cannot visit this deepest point at 1085 meters as it's at the bottom of an old coal mine shaft in the most south corner of the country.

Without the dykes, delta works and other barriers the Netherlands would become largely immersed under water. The Lowest point in the Netherlands is just a place at the bottom of a 'polder'. Here you hardly get a feel how low this point is. Our recommendation is to visit the nearby Hollandsche IJssel river dyke. You will be amazed about the height of the river at one side and the low-lying land at the other side of the dyke!
